When a giant hornet attacks a honeybee hive, the bees don’t sting it into submission. Instead, they do something far more unexpected: they swarm the intruder in a tight ball—sometimes hundreds of bees at once—and heat it up. By vibrating their flight muscles, the bees raise the temperature inside the “bee ball” to around 46°C (115°F)—hot enough to overwhelm the hornet, while the bees survive comfortably.
